Well, we said good-bye to 2013 and kicked off 2014 with a bang!  It was a soft bang…head hitting pillow.  Let me tell you, it was party central at our house until then.  Root Beer floats, peanuts, popcorn, chips, a wild game of “Deer in the Headlights” and a Hallmark movie that had us on the edge of our seats…of course, there was Auld Lang Syne.  I am really quite surprised we didn’t have a noise complaint reported by our neighbours!

So, here it is the first month of a new year!  A fresh start…this came to mind as I painted Steve’s office…out with the old and in with the new…a fresh start…like after a snowfall.  A new year with: new adventures, new challenges, new joys, new sorrows, new lessons, new choices, new perspectives, new moments, new grey hairs, new wrinkles, new aches and pains, new wonders, new friends, new memories, new__?__…and the list goes on.

The question that I have been trying to answer this week is why New Years?  Why do we get so excited to welcome in a new year?  What’s the BIG deal?  Yes, I understand the numbers in the year change.  They change every year on my birthday too, but that can be a bit depressing.  Why do we wait until January of a new year to make resolutions or decide to make a change?  To me there is no difference between December 31 and January 1…it’s just another new day.  I often answer my questions with a question(s) – my mind is a scary place.  So, here is my answer to the above and a question I pose to you…why celebrate once a year, why not celebrate every day with the ushering in of a NEW DAY?  Wouldn’t it be fun to walk around and say Happy New Day!…everyday?  What a hoot!  We could have a party every single day! (I think I should keep a party horn-blowy thing in my purse in case I get the urge.)  After all just to make it through a day is a gift…and to take a breath and open your eyes the next is a gift too.  For me focusing on each day as it comes and being thankful for that time is what I want to strive to do this year.  Happy New Day!!!

“This is the beginning of a new day.  I can waste it or use it for good.  What I do today is important because I am exchanging a day of my life for it.  When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever, leaving in its place something that I have traded for it.  I want it to be gain, not loss; good, not evil; success, not failure – in order that I shall not regret the price I paid for today.”
